RX78 Cosplay 2 by UbersCosplay RX78 Cosplay 2 by UbersCosplay
Myself as RX-78 Gundam.

Videos of the costume in action are available on Youtube >> www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkfUyN… <<

Costume took about a year to complete working on it off and on. The majority of it was completed in the 4 month interim between AFO 2011 and Chibi-pa 2011.

Materials used include PVC, Fiberglass, Bondo, Foamboard, Craft Foam and much more. The ipod on the side of the chest is hooked up to a speaker in the chest that plays various sounds clips and songs from various Gundam anime. The beam saber is made from a 1/12 scale official replica that was gutted and combined with electronics from a Star Wars FX lightsaber.

I won best in show at Chibi-pa in my first contest with this costume. :D

I am currently planning some major improvements and additions before I take it another con.

Hi, I'm just starting out and am still in 'research mode'. I too want to build an RX-78-2.
I saw your costume all over the place and its quality (which is epic by the way) and thought you'd be the guy to ask a couple of questions.
-what materials/techniques would you advise me NOT to use.
-how did you start, I.E. helmet first then other parts? or did you start from the ground up?
and finally any other general advice for a noob like me.
If you've already answered these questions somewhere else or have any articles you could point me to just point the way and I'll go there
Hope I'm not bugging you
Thanks for you time and for anything (advice wise) you can offer.
Ta. Matt

Hi there Matt! First off thanks for all the compliments!

For materials I would advise you DON'T use corrugated plastic or cardboard. Corrugated plastic will be difficult to remove the 'ridges from and will give an uneven finish. Cardboard while great for mockups is not very durable so i dont recommend it either. Fiberglass can be good but only if you have the right equipment and space to work with it as it can be dangerous if not used properly. Best advice for materials is to make sure you research materials you think you would like to use thoroughly and test out how they work with small amounts before committing to buying a ton of it for a build.

For my build I started with the helmet first. It was my first attempt with fiberglass so it was very rough at first (you can see the first version in my gallery) I returned to it twice to revamp and clean it up, that is the version you see in these pictures of the completed suit.

My best advice overall is to make alot of paper and cardboard mockups of parts before you finalize your design and make the final parts out of plastic or fiberglass or whatever. If possible make the entire suit once out of cheap materials like this first so you can ensure the scale of the outfit looks good. You dont want really tiny legs or an over-sized torso or head (My gundams head is a bit too big). This will let you make sure things are sized properly to your body and that everything will fit comfortably. It will also let you cut and change them as needed to achieve your desired fit or look without risking damage to a completed part.

If you would like to see more progress shots of my build check out my progress gallery on my FB at uberscosplay.

Good luck on your build! See you again!

How long did it take you to make the suit and how hard was it to make?

It took about a year of me working on it off an on, though Ive returned to it to make adjustments numerous times. Its not an easy build, though I am a bit more confident and faster now.

Great Work! Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost to make this? I'm wondering because i was thinking about getting into cosplay myself, and i don't want to end up with a half finished suit in the basement.

This probably cost me about $500-800 USD in materials. Its high because I ended up buying alot of materials that did not end up working as well as I thought they would at first and ended up having to buy other stuff. If I were to make it again knowing what I know now Id have to guess it could be done for 300-500$

cool, 2 last questions. 1: scale of 1-10, how comfortable is walking? I mean most mechs stand wider and have thicker legs than the average person, so it must be wierd not being able to close your legs all the way. 2: is there a way to adjust for that?

id say about a 6. Its not comfortable but its not agony either. As for the stance I make a conscious effort to walk with a wide stance to help the size illusion and to keep the shins and knees from knocking together. You just have to be careful on slick surfaces since you can be unstable when standing in a wide stance.
